Why the free tier is real
Running the app on your own machine costs us nothing, so we do not charge for it and we do not cap it. No memory limit, no trial clock, no nagging. It is the whole product, on one computer.
You start paying when your memory has to exist somewhere you are not — because that is the point where we are running servers on your behalf.
Questions people actually ask
Why is the $5 plan annual only?
Payment processing on a $5 monthly charge takes roughly 15% of it in fixed fees. Billed yearly it is about 5%. Same price to you, and the plan stops fighting its own economics.
What happens if I cancel?
The app keeps working on the free tier and your files are untouched — they were never ours to withhold. The cloud replica becomes inaccessible and is deleted after 30 days.
What counts as a device?
A computer running the Varven desktop app. Phones and AI clients do not count — you reach your memory through an assistant, so there is nothing to install and nothing to license.
Can I self-host the cloud side?
Not as a supported product yet. The protocol server is open source, so it is possible; it is not something we currently help with.
Do you offer team plans?
Shared and pooled memory is being built. If that is what you need, write to us — early team customers shape it.
Is there a student or open-source discount?
Ask. The answer is usually yes.
